Ellos mismos se definen como "un grupo de niños locos que vomitan blues tropical juvenil con ganas, muchas ganas, ganas de magnitud incalculable". "Y siempre llevamos camisas molonas". Son Nathan, J, Jason y Ned o, mejor dicho, The Lady Sounds. Una banda de música iniciada en los años de colegio, procedente de Barcelona, que está en todos los puntos de mira y de la que no han escatimado en elogios, incluso, medios extranjeros como el británico 'The Guardian' o 'The New York Times'.

1. He visto, si no me equivoco, que comenzasteis en el año 2007 bajo el nombre de Lady. ¿Porqué el cambio de nombre? ¿Cómo y en qué momento exactamente se os ocurrió formar el grupo?
Nathan: Cuando se formó el grupo, estuvimos meses discutiendo sobre qué nombre íbamos a a coger para representar esta unión que habíamos formado. Nos salió de todo: Greenlight, Sprout, Overload, y cientos de nombres chorras que nos subministraba el "Band Name Maker", una web que utilizábamos para crear nombres al azar con palabras que nosotros elegíamos. Hasta ahí llegaba el grado de desesperación para encontrar uno. Un bonito y luminoso día, a algún miembro del grupo se le ocurrió “Lady”. Nos gustó pero no nos convencía del todo. Investigamos por internet para asegurarnos de que nadie se lo había apropiado pero ya se nos habían adelantado. Decidimos entonces crear nuestro MySpace con este nombre en mente. Muchas bandas suelen añadir "sounds", "music" o "band" al final de su nombre si el dominio que querían ya estaba cogido. Creamos la pagina de www.myspace.com/theladysounds y repetimos en voz alta varias veces lo que habíamos escrito: "The Lady Sounds, ¿The Lady Sounds? ¡The Lady Sounds!" No nos lo pensamos dos veces, y a partir de ese momento pasamos a llamarnos, pues eso, lo que todo el mundo grita por la calle buscando libertad y comprensión: The Lady Sounds.

2. ¿Alguna anécdota de los inicios? ¿Y de los conciertos?
Jason: Pues sí, ahora que lo mencionas me acuerdo de una anécdota muy peculiar. Justo habíamos empezado el grupo y estábamos tocando uno de nuestros primeros conciertos. Estábamos todos muy contentos con el resultado del concierto hasta que en la penúltima canción "Absolutely Nothing" un gato saltó encima del escenario y empezó a arañar a Nathan en la pierna. Tuvimos que pausar el concierto hasta que conseguimos echar al gato de allí. No nos gustan los gatos.

3. ¿Cómo os describiríais como grupo para alguien que todavía no os conoce?
J: Nuestro sonido es difícil de definir, nuestra puesta en escena es imposible de explicar, pero lo que más se acerca es: "Somos un grupo de niños locos que vomitan blues tropical juvenil con ganas, muchas ganas, ganas de magnitud incalculable. Y siempre llevamos camisas molonas."

4. ¿Por qué en inglés?

Ned: Bueno, somos músicos bastante internacionales. Nathan es un belga/alemán de raíces inglesas paternas y argentinas maternas con afán por las lenguas, para decidir en qué idioma cantar, no tuvo más que elegir el idioma con el que hablaba en su cabeza. J es del pueblo de Barcelona mismo y los hermanos Martorell somos unos catalano-armenio-americanos nacidos en Nueva York.

Además, nuestros Dioses musicales cantan casi todos en inglés.

5. ¿Cuáles son vuestros grupos favoritos o vuestra inspiración?
J: Pink Floyd son nuestros Dioses. Led Zeppelin sus descendientes. Eric Burdon se hace la manicura y canta música barroca. Los bluesmen negros de los años 20 y 30 están sirviéndoles su whisky y limpiándoles las botas pero Robert Johnson, Leadbelly y Blind Lemon Jefferson lo hacen con más ganas. Karl Marx y John Locke recitan poesía de Lorca en el anfiteatro donde tocan un puñado de increíbles grupos jóvenes de la escena underground barcelonesa, catalana, y española en general. Cyndi Lauper y Blondie se pelean por la guitarra de Jimi Hendrix, y John Lennon sigue muerto. Una pizca de punk, otra de shoegazing y stoner distorsionado y mantequilloso. Falsettos, Jägermeister y un poco de electro. Todo eso sumado a la familia y los amigos son todo lo que hacen que seamos lo que somos y sonemos a lo que sonamos.

6. Veo que habéis ido haciendoos con el tiempo, poco a poco... ¿Es costoso ganarse al público español y hacerse un hueco en la música actualmente?
Ned: Realmente difícil, sí. Han sido horas de esfuerzo y de lágrimas de unicornio para llegar a ser lo que somos. Nos queda un largo camino por delante, lleno de giras, álbumes y fans incondicionales. El público español es realmente muy acogedor, pero cuesta que las salas te escuchen a principio. No ha sido fácil encontrar conciertos.

7. The Guardian, The New York Times... Muy buenas críticas y de los más prestigiosos medios de comunicación. ¿Cuál es vuestro objetivo actualmente?
J: Queremos seguir haciendo música, ruido y sudor. Componer mucho, y bien. Conseguir fans, llenar salas, romper guitarras, reventar tímpanos, colocarnos con la adrenalina de un concierto una y otra vez, gritar y saltar. Y si además cobramos, mejor.

8. ¿Siempre habéis tenido claro que os queríais dedicar a la música?
Jason: Sí y no. Desde siempre todos hemos querido dedicarnos a la música, a la creación de sonidos psicodélicos para enriquecer los oídios de los humanoides de la tierra, pero lo veíamos como un sueño imposible, lejano y de color fucsia. Pero ahora, al estar metidos en este mundo, vemos aquel sueño lejano mucho más real y posible, y sabemos con toda seguridad que nos queremos dedicar a esto.

9. Ahora mismo estoy escuchando vuestras letras a través de Myspace, ¿es una buena plataforma para bandas emergentes?
Nathan: Sinceramente, debemos todo a las nuevas tecnologías. Cierto que también han dado a luz la piratería, pero no estaríamos tocando en salas ni escribiendo estas mismas palabras si no fuera por estas redes sociales. MySpace nos ha permitido crear nuestra propia página personalizada en la que podemos presentarnos y hacernos un hueco en amplio mundo de la música. Se puede leer nuestra biografía, conocer nuestras influencias, pero sobretodo, nuestras propias canciones pueden ser escuchadas por todo aquél que quiera escuchar a una panda de niños gritando y haciendo ruido. Aunque nos parezca completamente normal a todos, encontramos que es increíble que con sólo un click podamos darnos a conocer y se pueda escuchar nuestra música en todo el mundo. Cualquier persona con un ordenador y una conexión mínima puede ser nuestro fan y saberse nuestras letras. Pero no sólo MySpace nos ha proporcionado una buena promoción, confesamos que casi todos los conciertos que hemos hecho se los debemos al grandioso y adictivo Facebook. Gracias a él hemos podido contactar salas, bandas, discográficas, managers y hasta posibles sponsors con los que estamos negociando ahora mismo. Perdón, ¿¡Cuál era la pregunta!? Pues podemos decir que es una plataforma excelente para bandas emergentes como nosotros, y esperemos que gracias a ella podamos conocer a grandes músicos para poder disfrutar la música de todos ellos.

10. ¿Qué recomendaríais a la gran cantidad de grupos musicales formados por gente joven y con ilusión que están deseosos de triunfar?
Ned: Pues que practiquen e innoven. Deben intentar hacer algo diferente a lo que se está haciendo hoy en día. Intentar romper barreras, crear sonidos nuevos, diferentes. ¡Ah! Y en los conciertos hay que darlo todo, TODO. Un grupo puede ser muy bueno, pero si no pega un buen espectáculo, la gente se va a aburrir.

11. ¿Algún secreto, plan de futuro o nuevos proyectos que nos podáis desvelar?
J: No tenemos muchos secretos. Jason, el batería, no existe... son los padres. A Ned, el bajista, le gustan las chicas que leen Freud en vez de ir a discotecas de pijos. Nathan, la voz, es un romántico con agallas y botas leñador. A mí, el guitarrista, me gustaría tener la piel de tartán y volar.
Según nos mandan nuestras creencias políticas del Facebook, el futuro se vive en presente. Pero somos pecadores y estamos planeando diversas giritas nacionales teloneando a grupos geniales. También estamos pensando en grabar un EP en Semana Santa de la extensión de un vinilo de 7 pulgadas a 45 revoluciones por minuto. Trigonometría básica.

This time the fortunate label is Reebok, with which the shop is releasing a pair of sick Pumps homaging the 20th anniversaire of the shoe. This website may has pointed just on a few label works, it doesn't talk about every single brand out there, only a few ones have some lines written about in this blog. Foreign Family is a constant in this blog, I don't really consider it an obsession or a creeping act though.

Since the birth of Above All, FF has been an example to follow, like a big (huge, enormous) brother to imitate (metaphorically). It doesn't mean copying, but having lookalike aims and common points of view about how and what art should be. I used to believe in the same artistic basics before founding AA and now they still haven't changed.

The reason of this post is the last announcement of the LA brand. The Family reconsiders its last 4 years life and concludes recognizing that, at some point, the very first ideals they fought for growing as a brand have distorsioned.
Since they have noticed that fact, their purpose is to relive and to learn about the mistakes they supposedly did and get back to their origins.

This one is an example of honesty and loyalty to their beliefs. Brands (and people) should assume their faults and rectify. When it comes to business it's hard to do such sudden turnarounds, but I reckon they'll meet their needs and will be back to the scene soon.
Such actions of self demand deserve to be regarded as heroic.

The original announcement is:

When we first started the brand, it was about having fun, rebelling against the system, drawing, doing FFun shit... it was never about numbers or yelling at accounts or being just another clothing brand. We forgot what it was like being us. We got caught up in the cycle of fashion. We started to be un-original...zero creativity...bad blood amongst ourselves... fights... firing people... debt... profit... more debt... collection... robbed... money... greed... stupid shit. haha! Control is an important thing. We grew FF to a point where we didn't know how to manage it's growth, it was all over the place... We had to slow down the pace, to a point where we were comfortable with... We've learned a lot through the past 4 years, and we will use that knowledge to bring back that spark Foreign Family had back when we first started: HUNGRY-GNARLY DESIGNS, FUN STUFF. More than t-shirts.=) We still here. Just bear with us. We promise to make it interesting peace CHAD & MR44 FOREIGN FAMILY

The Lady Sounds by Melanie Manneville

Back in March I was told to design a tee for a friend rock band called The Lady Sounds. Their musical career included just a few concerts in unknown local concert halls, they were at the Emergenza semifinals tho. Their tracks were lo-fi home recordings, but the songs were, and still are, impressive. The t-shirt was drawn, but still not produced. Time passed by and nobody cared about it.

In the middle of September I and New Stuff released the Dynamite tee, which relived Above All. The brand was definitely active. The Ladies had been productive too; their songs were finally studio recorded, finalists at Emergenza and were about to play at Sala Monasterio, one of Barcelona's most underground concert sites. Both sides of the project realized this was the moment to launch the tee, and so we did.

Now, after a week from the release, the hundred tees we produced are sold out and are waiting to be reprinted due to the huge amount of people who couldn't get it.
The Lady Sounds, after having played at Indie.Pendent, have been called to play with the legendary American 80's punk band The Adolescents at the Apolo [2], to play at Luz de Gas, l'Eclectic club and at the Rocksound hall. More concerts are still to come... check out their myspace for further info. I strongly believe they're the future of the Barcelona musical scene.

KEYS TO THE CITY by Foreign Family

The LA Family is about to release an art project with keys as the main pattern. By now the only two designs published are the NY and the Cali ones, the artwork is extremely clean and is full of minuscule significative details, an aspect i specially appreciate in such designs. Last week was kinda busy in all ways, specially in the Above All one. I got a last minute invitation for the Brandery from a friend and things started to go fast from Wednesday to Saturday. The Brandery circus, a strategy of the local government to fill the lack of a fashion show, wasn't bad at all, I was told that the famous Bread and Butter was born smaller than the Brandery is, so let's hope it survives and wins positions to be a Southern Europe reference.

The Outerspace was the best part of the show, featuring streetwear icons such The Hundreds, Crooks, Lafayette, Frank 151; footwear brands like Reebok, Etneis Plus, Lacoste, Emerica and Element and important magazines and publications such as Uno, SneakerFreaker, Streetwear Today and Staf.

HOW NOT TO MAKE A PAMPHLET

This is a clear example of how not to make a pamphlet, specially when the government is the one who is paying for its publication.
The aim of this leaflet is to encourage high-school students to graduate at a local university. Ok, the message isn't bad at all, but the aesthetic is definitely based in the anarchist posters made during the Spanish war in the late 30's.
The thing is that the person who has drawn this has just changed the guns by books and has kept with the red-black pattern typical of the spanish anarchist party (CNT).
In my opinion, it's not about being partisan or delving into politics 'cause I'm not really into it yet, however, from a historical context I reckon it isn't intelligent to make publicity in such a determinate aesthetic used for the army enrolment (no matter the side) during the saddest war my country has ever had.

The young Los Angeles based brand Ludwig has recently launched a sick t-shirt collection inspired again by their leit-motiv: paying homage to the German musician Ludwig van Beethoven. This time my fav one is the green one, which has a mighty illustration printed creating an effective double meaning illusion, one of the drawing sources I've worked with most.

I've always been into animal drawing due to different aspects such the wide range of available documentation and the strength, power and dynamism my drawings can get from the wildness. Once I was looking for some african savannah images when a fourteen-year-old National Geographic issue came to my hands. I found nothing interesting there but an advert showing a Belinda Weright's picture of a tiger, which was very familiar to me. It happened meanwhile the World IndustriesXNike SB Dunks were going to be launched, consequently the Rady Colvin's Space Deck was a constant in the net.

If you look carefully to the tiger in the picture and the tiger in the deck you'll see that they are the same one, therefore I'm a 100% sure Mr. Colvins took the inspiration from this photo and, in my opinion, did it extremely well intensifying the power the photo has in the drawing.

I've lately been too busy to spend some decent time in the Above All stuff. Now hard work is over and things are going enough well to slow down life dizziness before having a real brake in Easter.

This is a kind of second comeback after a serious time length stopped and I'm sure things are gonna come with more strength, power and personal background. At least, everything evolves and Above All and everyone taking part in this project aren't an exception. The current aim is not launching a regular line, cause nowadays shops can't effort holding new-brand full clothing collections, but taking part in some collabos and special edition stuff I'm really feeling.

To inaugurate this posting comeback I'd like to show what's taken me aback in the net these days:

New stuff 8 is a spanish blog born just a few weeks ago that follows the steps of some international online magazines such as Hypebeast or SlamXHype. It's a very pictorical webpage that gives an overview of the current street fashion, new-era design, music and own brand articles with a bit of subjective opinion.

FOREIGN FAMILY webpage's been rebuilt in order to give more quality info about art, clothing and the LA lifestyle. One of the best points is the e-shop where you can buy FF special edition t-shirts and more goods in a reasonable price.

From Germany, Dream Team Clothing has restructured their streetwear magazine blog
with a nice futuristic look and higher image quality.

ERT Skateshop has begun to sell via internet after 20 years of experience in the snowboard, suf and skate gear. It's a pleasure to stroll through its new webpage, where every single icon in the screen has its own life and movement. Somehow similar to the 24kts page.

In the music scene I'd like to introduce you to The Lady Sounds, a brand-new group headed by five young talented guys that will definitely reach to the top in case they keep on the same hi level and quality. It won't be strange if their name appears in this webpage lines more often..

THE BATTLE @ THE FREE

Last Sunday Free, one of the most authentic skate-shops of Barcelona, launched the first out of ten "The Battle @ The Free", paying tribute to the famous "Battle at the Berrics". This first edition featured Victor Lemus, a close friend - and class mate-, who is actually the first and unique Above All sponsored skater in the world, and Andrea Wilshusen.

Check the video to see how Lemus overcame an SKAT and won being on the edge.

SNEAK PEAK

I already have the WINTER 08-09 collection at home, which definitely has a more serious look than the last season, which was the main aim, due to the rise of the cotton weight in the fabrics, the embroidery, a better fit and the use of heavier inks. I still have to polish up a couple of things that aren't completely right yet, I reckon they're not a big deal though.

In approximately a week Ecinco (Logroño) and Undercrown (Zaragoza) are going to receive it, maybe more shops get it during the winter.

I'll have the official photos soon, until then I hope this sneak peak will satisfy the crowd.

Hace mucho tiempo que sé de estas camisetas, pero nunca me había fijado en ellas. Cola Cao fue la marca patrocinadora del "Mundobasket" España de 1986, para celebrar el acontecimiento Cola Cao, perteneciente a Nutrexpa, lanzó junto a Nike una serie de camisetas de las cuales dos llegaron hasta mi casa y, hasta hoy en día, siguen aquí.
Podría decirse que esta fue la primera "colaboración" entre Nike y una empresa española. (?)

No tienen nada en especial exceptuando el curioso - e interesante- detalle de las mangas y la etiqueta.

En teoría, en este número del suplemento en catalán llamado Què fem?, que va junto a La Vanguardia cada viernes, tenía que salir un anuncio que hace poco hice para la tienda ERT. Ayer, al buscar el anuncio entre las páginas de dicho suplemento no enconté anuncio alguno, pero sí un reportaje a página completa de la tienda y, además, tuve la grata sorpresa de que Sergi, el propietario de ERT, había tenido el detalle de mencionarme entre la gente esponsorizada por la tienda (Véase la última fotografía).

WINTER 08 - SPRING 09 FINAL PREVIEW

There's more stuff coming this winter: More designs, new colorways for the CAP LIVING tee and, what's new, a couple of hi quality hoddies, which will be very limited.

This time T-shirts fit and quality are going to improve: about 200 - 210 gr/m2 ris-pun cotton, which is more than lots of huge skateboarding companies tees have.

This season's concept lies, once again, on Barcelona, where I'm from, and skate, but this time it takes inspiration from the 50's comic Spirit, Will Eisner's most famous character.

The WINTER 08 - SPRING 09 collection, as its name says, is for both seasons, so, if you prefer ordering it for spring send a mail booking the t-shirts you want, because there won't be a hi number of t-shirts for each design. Be quick.

Some days ago I posted about a brand called Foreign Family and how awesome its fall collection was. Foreign Family is headed by MR44 and Chad, two friends that in the summer of 2003 started off their own brand, based in originality and intricate hand-drawn designs.

Since then, FF has grown up successfully launching collaborations with other brands, delving into cut&sew, doing a worldwide art tour and, finally, opening their official headquarters and a gallery in K-town, LA.

Yesterday, while I was doing my daily blogs review I found that Chad was in Bareclona for business, so I didn't miss the opportunity of talking to him about how the clothing industry is going on, I asked him for some advices to improve on my selling skills and I'm really impressed by his awesome selling knowledge. Chad, be sure I'll do everything you told me.

Of course, he couldn't leave Barcelona without an Above All tee.

I've been working on this season for nearly half a year, so I'm proud and I think it's a step closer to what I was looking for the day I set up Above All, and I know there's still a long way. Finalmente, después de un largo retraso, anuncio el lanzamiento oficial de la 1ª temporada de Above All. Será el lunes 21 de julio en la tienda de skate ERT. La colección finalmente se ha limitado en 2 camisetas que ya se pudieron ver anteriormente en la misma web. También a partir de ése día se podrá ver la camista fruto de la colaboración entre ERT y Above All. Os dejo con algunas imágenes acompañadas con algunos pares representativos de Barcelona.

The girl from the UCLA booth was surprised when I showed her the cap of UCLA that my mother bought me in Chicago about 12 years ago. This photo shows the old cap (right) and the new cap (left), I personally prefer the old one, colors and graphics are better.

Como ya avisé en el anterior post Above All tiene una colaboración cociendose en el horno. Esta primera colaboración de la marca será con la mítica tienda barcelonina de skate ERT y está prevista para finales de marzo.

La camiseta se venderá en dos gamas de colores (blanco y negro) bajo un mismo lema: Finding the truth (encontrando la verdad). Se limitarán en sólo 40 camisetas por color y se venderán exclusivamente en ERT.

Ya tocaba, después de tan largo trabajo, mostrar los diseños que formarán la primera temporada de ABOVE ALL. He trabajado para que cada camiseta tenga su estilo y no se parezca a las demás de la colección. Aquí van:

ABOVE ALL BARCELONA

Esta camiseta rinde homenaje a Barcelona y a Gaudí e identifica uno de los símbolos más extendidos de la ciudad de procedencia de Above all. Se hace un juego de colores con el ROOT PRINT en azul que, encima del marrón, crea el color púrpura. He apostado por la simplicidad y el simbolismo para crear un diseño que se adapte bien a lo que espero de una camiseta, que sea llevable y sin estridencias. Ante todo Barcelona.

CAP LIVING

En este diseño, mi favorito, he hecho algo más personal yéndome a la rama de la ilustración, uno de mis puntos fuertes. Así presento una camiseta completamente dibujada a mano que representa lo que la temática del streetwear puede dar de sí en un dibujo.

ABOVE ALL, desde 2008

Hace ya unos meses empecé a diseñar camisetas para un proyecto que empezó siendo sólo una simple idea de un grupo de amigos. Más tarde, el conjunto que formaba el proyecto en cuestión se disolvió quedando únicamente uno de sus componentes. Así es como surgió ABOVE ALL, una marca de streetwear procedente de Barcelona que se mueve entre el género de la ilustración y el diseño en general. Me baso en lo que veo, en lo que mi imaginación abarca y en lo que la espontaneidad del dibujo da de sí. De esta forma intento crear algo personal pero que, en mi opinión, pueda gustar a alguien. Eso es todo lo que por el momento puedo decir, lo demás se verá sobre la marcha.
